On one hand, this is a smart solution for advertisers. On the other hand for web users, this is just another layer of brainwashing advertising bullshit. Enough already…
There’s another problem with this kind of advertising. Those recaptchas you’re used to filling out are actually for a good cause. Books are being digitised so we can access them across the web, or so future generations can research them. I don’t need to point out the potential historical benefits of this. Sometimes, computers can’t read certain words, because of damage on the page, a misprint, or just an odd spelling.
This is where human processing comes in; we are pattern observing machines, and we can read those words the computer can’t. So the recaptcha helps complete the digitisation of books, and we keep sites secure. This project will get thrown off the rails when site owners get the option to earn pennies to put an ad in place, and since Google own recaptcha, they’ll probably follow suit.
I’ll give the advertisers some leeway. If you stop with the pop-ups, you can do whatever you want.
