The McGurk Effect - cool audio/visual illusion.
From Boing Boing:
This video demonstrates how looking at someone’s mouth movements affects the way we hear what they are saying. The man in the video is saying “bah, bah, bah,” but when the same audio recording is played while he mouths out “fah, fah, fah,” it sounds like he is saying “fah, fah, fah.”

Tom Davenport Interview on BBC Introducing
Click play to listen to my third interview with the local BBC Wiltshire Introducing show. I love this local show and the presenters have been really supportive of my work the past year, big thanks to them for giving me continued coverage.
You can hear my previous interviews with them here.

Rory Sutherland: Life lessons from an ad man | TED.com
I love this video on ‘intangible value’. I couldn’t possibly explain it better than this man, Rory Sutherland, who is so funny and endearing, you’ll forgive him for being in advertising.

Highlighter →
I had a great idea early in 2010 where you could comment on specific parts of text on a site. With comments being at the bottom of the page, sub-topics become fragmented and people tend not to bother scrolling through a bunch of them. By commenting on specific sentences, topics are clear and the discussion would be concentrated.
It would seem that around the same time, this US team thought of the...

Is this evidence that X Factor is being fixed? →
First of all, sorry to anyone reading this who hates X Factor. The thing is, I hate this show thinking it can pull the wool over the eyes of an entire country, and it winds me up to know that a contestant didn’t get the fair shot she deserved by having the vote go to deadlock.
So this week saw Katie and Treyc go head to head in a sing off after getting the lowest votes for the weekend....

Mr Jones Innovative Watches
I love the watches by the small soho boutique Mr Jones Watches, who experiment with their time telling in all kinds of ways. This new model, The Last Laugh, uses the rotating teeth of a skull, though their range is full of equally smart approaches.
My favourite is the Cyclops DX, which is a ‘round-about’ watch. It doesn’t tell the exact time, but a circle passing over hour...

HD Audio Converter shootout: Avid HD IO,... →
The cream of the high-grade converter crop were pitted against each other in a double-blind test with leading recording engineers. So who won?
Four units were included in the tests: the new Avid HD IO(which has the same A-D and D-A converters as the Omni, and thus should in theory sound identical to it); an original Digidesign 192 IO from the previous generation of HD interfaces; a Prism Sound...

The Mac App Store – Apple vs. Developers |... →
I knew the new Apple Mac Store would be yet another game changer, but I didn’t realise the hit existing app business would take. This post by iwascoding, who make the eBay app Garage Sale, make some points you just wouldn’t realise:
Since all apps are secured by the same copy-protection theme, I’m certain generic cracks will be available shortly after the release of the App Store....

Orchestra with punk violin soloist. The back story:
“Basically, the composer John Oswald invited his friend Jon Rose to play a completely improvised solo over Tchaikovsy’s violin concerto. Jon Rose being the mischievous person he is, performed the solo in his own unique way. This all happened with the skeptical backing of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, creating a whole new...

Mixing Desk: Allen & Heath GS-R24
My gear lust is going off the meter a little here, because Allen & Heath are about to release their new mixing desk, the GS-R24.
This new desk is based on the Zed R16, and the feedback we gave the designer Mike Griffin on Gearslutz. The R16 was a big deal, even winning ‘Best Studio Console 2009’. As far as I know, it was the first desk to really pull off a firewire desk with...

My gride sounds now featuring on 'Write or Die' →
As it’s the time of year for NaNoWriMo, I remembered an old post about the sound design I did for the popular psychological word processor Write or Die.
In January I’m going back to the University of Huddersfield to continue this research into an MA. Maybe time for a new blog to track it?
